The authors of Recovery remind us that the journey of, “Healing is within us.”
Recovery stays with us through every season of life, even until our final breath on earth. It reminds us that the support of peers and friends is here to comfort us, protect us, guide us, and help us heal. Recovery offers peace when life feels overwhelming. That is good news for all of us.
Sometimes, when we are trying to live a life of Recovery, we are unsure of what to do next. We can feel like a driver trying to make it through a snowstorm with very little visibility.
Recovery does not take away all the snow, wind, or icy roads. But Recovery does something very important. Imagine driving through a blizzard without windshield wipers or four-wheel drive. Recovery climbs into the car beside us and says, “I know the snow is falling hard, and I know the winds are strong. But I will stay with you and help guide the way.”
We cannot see the future, but we trust that Recovery is with us. We learn to ask, “What do you want me to do? Which direction should I go?”
What does Recovery mean to me?
Recovery began the moment I realized I could not walk this journey alone. I needed companions beside me. They helped clear away the snowdrifts so I could find strength and begin healing. I invited others to walk beside me, to listen, offer guidance, provide comfort, and show compassion without judgment.
And when I fall, I ask my companions to help lift me back onto my feet.
Recovery is not meant to be a solo journey. When the blizzard of mental health struggles grows fierce, 12-step Recovery helps me manage my symptoms. It may not completely remove depression, anxiety, or trauma, but it gives me the warmth and strength to keep moving forward. The steps help prevent another emotional avalanche.
As we practice Recovery, it begins to dwell deeply within us. It gently draws us closer to healing and encourages us to take healthy action each day.
That is what happens when we pray, meditate, and reflect on our Recovery journey.
