May 5, 2026 “Where Healing Becomes Real!”

May is Mental Health Awareness month. If you would like to get involved or learn more about this, go to Home | SAMHSA – Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

When we hear something we have never heard, it can be hard to understand. But when we hear something we have lived, it makes sense right away. That is why second-hand Recovery is not enough. Other people cannot carry us through it. We need something personal, real, and easy to recognize in our own lives.

Recovery does not turn us away when we have doubt. It meets us right in that place. Even after we begin to heal, we still carry scars from our pain. Our wounds are not erased. Instead, we are changed by what we have been through. At times, we may think Recovery should remove all our pain. But that is not how it works.

What was wounded in the past may still be there, but it no longer holds the same pain. It begins to tell a new story—a story of love, forgiveness, and mercy.

Recovery does not avoid hard things. It grows as we face them. It meets us just as we are, and gently helps us move forward.

When I first began Recovery, I worked with a therapist in both individual and group sessions. I struggled to connect on a deep emotional level. It felt like they had not lived the same kind of pain I had known. Later, I joined a weekly support group. There, I met peers who had lived through similar struggles. They understood the weight of emotional and mental pain. With them, Recovery became real and personal.

In that group, I learned I could begin to let go of years of suffering. I did not forget what happened to me as a child, but it no longer controls me.

I think of it like my knee surgery years ago. The surgeon had to cut deep to repair the damage. At first, there was a lot of pain. But over time, the pain faded. A scar remained, but the knee was healed and strong again. The injury was not erased—it was transformed.

Recovery is not something we inherit. It is something we live. We do not need to hide our wounds. When we let safe and caring people into our lives, their shared struggles become a gift of love to us.

When we face our wounds with honesty and trust, we stop fighting ourselves. And in that gentle space, the deepest parts of us begin to heal.
