May 6, 2026 “Walking the Way of Recovery!”

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. If you would like to get involved or learn more about this, go to Home | SAMHSA – Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

When we enter Recovery, one of the first things we want is to know the way. Recovery is not just an idea—it is a way of life.

We already understand some ways of life. For example, a person who is a carnivore eats only meat. That is the focus of their diet. It is clear and simple—they know what they do and do not eat.

In the same way, different groups and beliefs have their own ways. Some people follow certain systems, ideas, or teachings. A person in a Depressed Anonymous group learns a way of living that supports healing. Each path points to principles, guidance, and sometimes even mystery.

To become part of the Recovery community—what we can call The Way—two things are needed.

First, we need to learn the way of life that Recovery teaches so we can heal and help others.
Second, we need to live that way through our actions each day.

When we fully enter Recovery, we are like new plants. The word “neophyte” means a new plant. Just as a young plant needs care, water, and sunlight, we also need support and nourishment to grow.

In the early part of my own Recovery, I was guided through the 12 Steps. I was encouraged to pray, reflect, join a support group, and take part fully in my healing. I gave my best effort, and I am grateful for that. Even now, I keep growing. I continue to explore the deeper parts of Recovery, which often call for faith.

This journey is not always easy. There are times when I lose my way. Sometimes I forget to care for myself, or I feel overwhelmed by my health and daily struggles. When that happens, I return to what helps me grow—support groups, writing, and connecting with others in Recovery. These things help “prime the pump” and feed my heart and soul. They guide me back to The Way.

So I gently ask you:

How are you living the life of Recovery—the Way?
Do you truly know it… and are you living it each day?
