April 27, 2026 “The Sacred Presence of Recovery!”

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

We have driven the same road from our homes to the grocery store before. We have attended church services before. We have read books on spirituality before. We have shared meals with family and friends before.

But Recovery is not like this. Recovery is different. It is guided by the 12 Steps of Unshakeable Recovery. This journey asks us to take the road less traveled each day—with faith, hope, and compassion.

Recovery invites us to face the questions that have always been there and still remain:
Why do we recover?
We can take medication. We can use alcohol or drugs to cope. We can live in isolation and convince ourselves we do not need others. So why choose Recovery?

We can read about Recovery—and that is good. We can attend a support group—and that is important. But there is something deeper, something sacred about Recovery: the living presence found within the 12 Steps.

There are different levels of presence. Recovery is all around us. Yet there is a more intentional, active, and powerful presence when we sit quietly and allow ourselves to be nourished by the healing power of the 12 Steps.

God is with us in a unique way in Recovery. His presence can move deeply within us and gently transform our hearts.

I have come to recognize the impact the 12 Steps have had on my life. About halfway through my journey, I felt a gentle nudge from God, reminding me that He was truly present. At that time, I was not fully open. But little by little, I began to open my heart to His healing love.

One powerful example was my ability to forgive my parents for the harm they caused me. Over time, I was able to release the anger and bitterness I had carried since childhood. That freedom did not come all at once—it came through grace, patience, and the work of Recovery.

Twelve Steps of Recovery

1 We believe that Recovery is possible. With courage and hope, we commit to overcoming the internal and external barriers that stand in our way.

2 We believe that a loving God will restore us spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.

3 We decrease our human desires to hear the voice of God in our lives.

4 We make a Recovery plan after an honest reflection of our behavior.

5 We share our Recovery plan with God and other people who support us.

6 We surrender to God our suffering, anger, resentments, and other emotions blocking our Recovery.

7 We accept God’s unconditional love and compassion into our lives.

8 We connect with peers in Recovery and invite their presence into our lives.

9 We are imperfect human beings. Make amends to a person when necessary, then release shame, guilt, and other emotions getting in the way of our growth.

10 We continue to review our recovery plan and revise it when necessary.

11 We realize Recovery is not just an intention but also an action. Through prayer, reflection, and mindfulness, we seek guidance from God and people in our support network.

12 We are having a spiritual awakening as a result of our Recovery. We are learning to love ourselves and practicing these steps in all of our affairs.
