I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you—right where you are.
Do we ever wonder if Recovery is speaking to our hearts and conscience? Even with mental health struggles or substance misuse, the answer is yes. Recovery is expressed through the support groups we attend, the books we read, and the new behaviors we learn.
When we engage in these practices, we open our hearts to be fed. Sometimes we read or hear something that makes us feel uneasy, excited, or stirred up. We may not want to listen because we feel corrected. Other times, we feel inspired or filled with joy. Both moments can be messages from Recovery, guiding us with love.
Recovery rarely shows the whole journey at once. The 12-steps guide us, but they are not the only part of our path—they are simply a big part. Recovery leads us gently, one step at a time. We can ask ourselves: What do I want to focus on? What am I doing well? Is what I’m doing bringing joy into my life?
Recovery is joyful when he thinks of us. He loves us deeply.
Recovery does more than shine light on our situations. He shines light on our hearts, helping our desires grow closer to his. Recovery is alive and active—full of love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace. He is always ready to care for us and give us what we need.
Listening to Recovery begins by opening our hearts to his clear messages. Practicing the 12-steps shapes us, steadies us, and protects us from getting stuck in our own thoughts, especially when they turn dark. Recovery promises to guide us in the right direction.
Recently, I have felt a tug on my heart to go deeper into my spiritual life. In silence, on walks, or while reading, I keep hearing a soft voice say, “Seek out a spiritual director.” So I reached out to a priest to help me find someone I can meet with on this journey.
Let the 12-steps become a place where you listen.
What is Recovery saying to you today?
With Recovery, nothing is impossible.
