Earlier today, I listened to a daily devotional by Bruce Downes, “The Catholic Guy.” His message spoke directly to those of us in Recovery. We all make plans for our lives—but do we include God in them? When we do, God may sometimes ask us to change direction.
When I was in graduate school studying athletic administration, I planned to become a basketball coach and athletic director. But during my final semester, something stirred deep inside me—I believe it was the Holy Spirit. I no longer felt called to coach or lead a program.
At that time, my faith was unsteady. After graduation, I applied for many jobs I was qualified for, one of which was social work. I decided to let go and let God lead me. That decision opened the door to a 30-year career as a social worker, ending with my retirement in 2018. Looking back, I see clearly that God was directing my steps.
The Bible reminds us that humans make plans, but God guides our path. In Recovery, Step 4 invites us to make a plan after honest self-reflection, and Step 10 reminds us to review and adjust it as needed.
Just yesterday, my therapist and I reviewed my goals. I now realize these are my plans—but I had not asked whether they align with God’s plans for me. Thankfully, it’s never too late to bring our goals before God and allow Him to shape them.
When we include God in our plans—and share them with trusted people—it strengthens our resolve and deepens our Recovery. You are part of my support network, so I share my goals below with honesty and hope.
My Therapy Goals:
Continue managing symptoms through journaling, mindfulness, support groups, and collaboration with providers.
Stay active and social to support mental health through family time and enjoyable activities.
Practice self-compassion, self-care, and self-kindness.
Seek balance and coping around health concerns, recognizing the link between physical and mental health.
Keep God at the center of my Recovery through prayer, writing, and spiritual community.
When we trust God with our plans, we may find He leads us somewhere far better than we ever imagined.
