One of the greatest prescriptions for healing from mental health struggles or substance misuse is connection. Relationships with family, friends, and communities are cornerstones of Recovery. These connections look different for each of us, but all carry the power to restore and sustain us.
Each year, in the town of Bessières, France, people gather to cook an omelette large enough to serve thousands. The tradition dates back to when Napoleon’s army passed through the region. After being served an omelette, Napoleon was so delighted that he ordered the townspeople to collect every egg they could find to prepare one enormous meal for his soldiers.
Since 1973, this tradition has lived on. More than 15,000 eggs are cracked, whisked, and cooked in giant pans over open flames, creating a fluffy, golden omelette shared by the entire community. Yet the true nourishment comes not from the food, but from the togetherness it represents.
Like the people of Bessières, we too thrive when we gather—whether around a table, in a meeting, or within the circle of friendship. Strong relationships are linked to greater joy, reduced anxiety and depression, and deeper resilience against life’s storms.
Loneliness and isolation, however, carry heavy risks for both mind and body. As human beings, we are created for connection. Through meaningful relationships, we discover belonging, purpose, and a steady source of hope that feeds the soul.
