We have been watching the person in Recovery on the shore with quiet wonder since the moment we first saw her. Now she moves quickly toward us, calm and steady. Gently, she takes one of our friends by the shoulders, and he says, “It is a person in Recovery.”
The look on our faces is priceless.
Forget the surfboard. Forget the crowd, the waves, the music. We slip on our sandals, the hot sand giving way to pebbles that press into our feet as we hurry forward.
We stand together, eyes fixed on her. One of us whispers, “How did we know?”
The person in our group smiles softly and says, “Your heart tells you.”
In Recovery, we may have moments like this—times when we encounter someone no longer bound by suffering, someone who reflects transformation and hope. We meet them in families, friendships, support groups, or work. How do we know who to trust, who to walk alongside?
“Your heart tells you“.
