July 2, 2025 Gentle Self-Talk!

How do we learn to be gentle? Gentleness is kindness, calmness, and softness. We may recline on the breast of a person we love. We may become gentle with ourselves and others if we do likewise. Then we will hear the heartbeats of Recovery, and we will be able to help others listen to them.

Resting is as important as being active. For some of us, inactivity means we are lazy, we lack purpose, see it as a waste of time, or it stirs up emotions we would rather not face. Often, these messages were delivered by a parent, coach, or other important person in our lives. I began to hear them as a child.

We can overcome the messages that inactivity produces in our lives. When we decide to rest, it allows us to become aware of our self-talk. When the conversation with ourselves is shameful, “I’m Bad,” or produces unproductive feelings, it helps to write in a journal or talk it out with a person in Recovery.

For some of us, it can take time to reduce the harshness and sternness. Gentle conversations with ourselves are healing. When we are at rest is an ideal time to be gentle with ourselves. When we are at rest is an ideal time to recline on the lap of a person or an imaginary person we feel safe with.

Due to the 4th of July holiday on Friday, there will be no blog post. I will return Monday, July 7, 2025.
