Here is a question to ponder, “How do we Recover?” How do we offer an answer that is responsive and reflective of our circumstances and our situation where we want to overcome the internal and external challenges, barriers, and obstacles confronting us?
A simple but at the same time difficult thing to do, we ask for a spiritual presence to come into our lives to free us of guilt, shame, anger, and fear. This is something we may consider every single day. We may rely on God (higher power) rather than go it alone. By doing this it offers us an understanding of Recovery and healing. The 12 steps of Recovery provide one singular option that is available to all of us (It is not the only option).
So when we use the 12-steps, as we do at support groups, we do at least more often than not recite the steps, learn to apply them in our lives, and use the term, “We.” When “We” use this word we are recognizing all of our brothers and sisters in Recovery.
When we consider all of this and acknowledge our healing occurs through relationships and supportive peer groups we associate with every single day. We let go of our shortcomings towards others which may include shame and unnecessary guilt. Our unforgiveness stands in the way of forgiveness and our healing. Our capacity to love one another fully but hold on to revenge and retribution stands in the direct way of receiving forgiveness.
We may want to be careful to recognize everyone is to be forgiven. Now, our Recovery does not say we are to forget. There is nothing in Recovery that says, “Forgive and forget”. We have been given the grace of memory so we remember those things. Despite remembering we are called to forgive. Forgiveness releases us from the agony of holding on to anger.
By forgiving we allow ourselves to be free. The purpose of forgiving is for our benefit so we can more openly open our hearts to healing. Now this does not mean we invite the person who harmed us to do a fun activity together. What this means is we forgive them and they will face the consequences of their actions through a spiritual or religious practice.
“This is one way we can Recover”.
