I remember being a basketball coach for sixteen—to eighteen-year-olds in high school. We had an excellent year and ended up winning the state championship. I was overjoyed to see the kids celebrate their victory with each other. The next day I said to myself, “Is this it?” After a long season filled with pressure to win the truth of the matter is, “It is never it”.
We are reminded to do it every day for Recovery not just once in a lifetime. The process of being in Recovery is ever-evolving and developing regardless of age or position. We learn to meet our basic needs such as clothing, housing, medical care, and nutrition. We may enter a group or program and ask to be vulnerable with strangers. We are called to support each other all in the name of healing.
Our hearts whisper to us, “Reflect on this, check our consciousness by looking into our hearts asking Recovery to be present to soak in the love and healing it offers us.” Recovery can be a room we enter to seek forgiveness for our blindness and pray or meditate asking for help to see our truth.
When something happens in our lives we say to ourselves, “Is this it”? It usually is not a one-and-done proposition. I recently thought about a man I know who is older and single. He gives rides to those in need, makes food for meals at church, volunteers to do repairs for people, and other selfless activities. He teaches us about generosity and volunteering. If we asked him where he learned to serve in this manner he might say, “His father or people in the community”.
When we consider what the man might say, it makes us humble, especially when we reflect on the previous paragraph. We are called to be inspirational this is what we are called to be. We teach each other the components of Recovery every day by how we decide to live our lives. Healing nudges us to a particular rhythm of love, a rhythm of action and this is how we become the best version of ourselves. Rather than saying to ourselves, “Is this it”? We recognize each moment is a celebration of, “Small moments bearing much fruit in our lives”.
