Today’s blog may seem a little dark. The content is necessary for us to hear on our healing journey. I share these words to offer hope for us and my love for our Recovery.
I was not a big fan of haunted houses as a child. I entered them with great trepidation hoping nothing would scare me. I ended up closing my eyes probably 80% of the time as I walked through the maze of scary monsters. When I returned home my parents listened to my haunted experience and probably thought I would be sleeping in their bed with them for the next month. My dad said, “Sleep on the couch next to our bedroom” Well I was affected by this incident for a long time. Sleeping on the couch is the starting point for healing.
Parents try to keep their children away from haunted houses. Some demons can harm us. Sadly to find them we do not need to look far today. Trust in Recovery to heal us from our fears but we do have to have our eyes wide open to see the demons in our lives.
First, in ourselves, we need to identify the inner shortcomings that tax our lives. We are tempted to shut our eyes no matter the amount of harm the inner demons do to us. We need to take a realistic look inside ourselves, perhaps a daily examination of consciousness helps us make forgiveness more meaningful. Second, there are demons in others who suck the life right out of the room. Last, there are societal demons that yell out and want to keep us from healing.
We live among people and cultures encouraging us to do things the easy way. We get blinded by false security. My dad meant no harm by having me sleep on the couch since he wanted to protect me. Yet the reality is there are harmful and destructive people all around us.
When we encounter Recovery this changes everything, we see it over and over again in the support groups we attend, reading self-help literature, seeing a therapist, seeing a psychiatrist, and other supportive resources. We keep our eyes open and watch evil vanish. The best protection is detection, eyes wide open even if it is scary that we may see the darkness and bring it into our Recovery program.
Recovery can rid us, cure us, and at the same time challenge us to challenge others to do the same. Together we grow closer to God (Higher Power) and there is no room for demons in our lives.
