Recovery is a symbolic baptism where we find hope, healing, and health. We begin to learn to balance our needs with those of our partner, children, family, co-workers, and classmates.
Healing means we are worth more than a sparrow. Sparrows do not hold a high value in the animal community. Viewed as troublesome, sparrows often nest in places we would rather not have them. For example, a farmer’s cornfield or a rooftop where they are prone to depositing their waste like pigeons.
Recovery is a calling that nudges our hearts and souls. The initial calling is to love ourselves, have compassion for ourselves, and realize that we are fully human and, thus prone to the mistakes and joys of being human.
During our recovery, we may experience division from other people. The reason is we are focusing on our mental health condition/addiction. While misusing substances we have friends we hang around who behave like us. We are no longer using and finding out substance misuse was all we had in common with our friends. This was the foundation for many of our friendships. Our friends will continue attempting to draw us in, but we must overcome this temptation and focus on embracing our new life.
People may reject us when we take the steps to recover from a mental health condition. Before recovery, we may have been passive or acted as a victim. During recovery, we find our voice, take responsibility for our behavior, and identify our wants and needs. This will lead us to a life full of hope, healing, and health.
Reflection:
“Never underestimate how impactful some of the small things you do during recovery impact your healing. Maybe others will follow your desire to recover”. Larry Winter
