January 2, 2025 Welcome to the New Year!

Welcome to 2025! The experts tell us it takes 21 days to form a habit. This means I will continue writing 2024 on my checks and other forms of documentation I am required to fill out. The good news is at midnight on the 22nd of January I will have mastered a new habit – 2025.

Step 10 of Recovery states, “We continually review our Plan of Recovery with our Higher Power, support team, and people we trust”. A New Year is a wise time to review our Plan of Recovery and make any necessary adjustments to become the best version of ourselves.

The following are my therapy goals:

  1. Manage my symptoms by journaling to track my symptoms, scaling my symptoms (1 dark mood to 10 bright mood), reflecting, and attending support groups.
  2. Continue deepening my relationship with God and learn to incorporate it into my Recovery.
  3. Living a balanced lifestyle by integrating; mental, physical, and spiritual health.
  4. Engage in pleasurable activities to improve mood and emotional regulation.
  5. Create new habits by practicing using Dialectal Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Mindfulness.
  6. Grow in self-compassion and self-kindness.
  7. Continue ongoing individual therapy to regulate mood.
  8. Continue doing activities to support a healthy lifestyle, such as mindfulness, diet, church community, support groups, spending time with family, writing, and others.

Living in the moment is critical for my overall health. I use my past to help develop new habits rather than being emotionally stuck. I use my future to connect with my heart and provide hope for my life rather than being anxious about situations that in all likelihood will never happen.

Each of us has a different Plan of Recovery tailored to our individual needs. This is a time of year to revisit our plans and make any adjustments. I will continue to use the eight goals to navigate the year ahead.

There are two I want to add:

  1. Accept fully who I am
  2. Complete my next book – 365 Days of Recovery – A Meditation for each day in a Year –

Whether we have a mental health condition and substance misuse or we support people with these conditions I send a heartfelt blessing to you as we embark on our journey of Recovery in 2025.
