During Christmas and the New Year, I will be spending time with family, resting, and enjoying other holiday activities. The final blog post for 2024 will be on Monday, December 23, 2024. I will return on Thursday, January 2, 2025. The Peer Support Group will be held on Thursday, December 26 and Thursday, January 2, 2025. https://superhumanbeing.net/thursday-zoom-event/
A person I know shared with me a memory of when they were working at a Catholic High School. They said, “We had to prepare an open house where parents of 8th graders would tour the high school”. This opportunity helped parents decide where to send their children to school.
The person said, “We strategized about this and we as administrators sat down and decided we had nothing to hide or fear. Let’s not just have honor students and athletes show the guests around. Let’s ask our students who would like to give a tour and use generosity as a determining factor”.
Two things happened, first, we had more students than we could imagine from every walk of life-giving tours. Second, our enrollment increased dramatically when parents encountered, through our student’s eyes, the beautiful mosaic (picture) that made up our school.
This is similar to Recovery because we may not be known people or community leaders. But we are part of a family, have friends, and live in or near a community. Occasionally people are deciding whether to join our weekly support group. We hear comments such as, “I don’t believe my mental health is that bad” or “My mental health is really bad will I be accepted”.
There may be similar comments when we discern whether or not to engage in therapy, see a psychiatrist, begin an exercise program, take part in a community activity, and others. We are all part of the community under this reality Recovery points out that we all matter.
When we encounter a person suffering from a mental health condition and substance misuse or we are discerning how difficult our condition is or we are in Recovery let’s see the beauty in each person and ourselves. When we see ourselves and other people as part of the community (Recovery) it actually can change our lives forever.
Recovery is about seeing and healing on one level, it’s about the community on the other. May we as a Recovering community never silence those around us. May we live in hospitality and welcome people to encounter healing. May we truly observe, and be given a vision that sees the beauty of all and calls us to serve because our faith allows us to heal.
