November 26, 2024 Combs Used In The 1950s

Due to the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday, no blogs will be available on November 28th & 29th. There will be no Peer Support Groups on November 28th and December 5th. Our next support group will be on December 12th.

A person called a friend of mine saying he was closing his Stationary Store and offered my friend some combs. He thanked the store owner and when he went to pick them up he was shocked to see 12,000 combs that were used in the 1950s and not anymore.

My friend tried to give them to the kids in a high school where he taught at the time and the kids said, “No way”. He tried offering them to a hospital and their response was, “No thanks”. The good news was a local nursing home took some, 500 which left him with 11,500 combs. It would take my friend 32 years if he used one per day and threw it into the garbage.

We notice as we begin Recovery and throughout our lifetime the constant need for stockpiling and acquiring. For some of us, it is about looking good to friends and families. For others, it fills a mental and emotional void in our lives. If we say this is not us take a mental ride with me to a big box store which has many things we want to purchase. Most times we buy more than needed, we stockpile because it is part of our nature.

Recovery knows this and brings up deep virtues in a seemingly simple story. The only thing that will fill us is living with the graces of the 12 steps. Acknowledging healing love, learning we are enough just as we are, and serving others are ideas to add to our plan of care. Ultimately we know by active healing our soul will experience rest.

It is a fact, stockpiling communally, and nationally will leave us unfilled and wanting more. The combs my friend received were left in his childhood bedroom closet 20 years ago. He said, “They are probably still there”.

Let us reflect, we can triumph over stockpiling the need for abundance and allow the power of Recovery to call us and fill us to heal mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Recovery wants us to build our virtues by using the 12 -steps as our screenplay.
