Luke was journeying to a city called Whey, he was with his wife. He was attracting people because he just come from a community to help them find healing due to several adults suffering from a mental health condition. Luke was getting noticed for the incredible things he was doing.
A large group of people from Whey were lost as they mourned the impact of mental health on a family member and friend. Luke saw the suffering and spent time with those adults who had a mental health condition. During their time together several of them improved. They gained a deeper understanding of why they behaved in a certain way, the importance of reaching out to make connections with people, and were encouraged to join a Recovering community.
People in Whey were incredibly impressed with Luke’s efforts. They said, “Who could this guy be”? Luke helped the community tear down the walls of mental health stigma and offered tools to those in Recovery. He restored people’s ability to love because he joined them together because of his efforts.
This story highlights the power of connection with other people. Mental Health conditions, addiction, and trauma are difficult to accept in our communities. This story also highlights the suffering and mourning in our hearts if we have these conditions or support a loved one with one of these conditions.
So how do we move from suffering and mourning?
How do we move from the loss of someone we knew and loved?
How do we understand these conditions?
How do we reconcile any guilt or shame we may carry?
Communities, families, and friends can help someone, save someone, and perform a miracle. I see it over and over when my therapist facilitates a technique to ease my suffering or I connect with a peer and they tell me about a good book to read or my wife is willing to listen when my mood is low. Where are these moments for you?
That miracle moment is every day. We do not need to fear our conditions. Our lives on this earth are similar to a hunk of clay. It will be a work in progress, never perfect, and full of blemishes. Our lives have many commas full of thanks, blessings, love, and warmth of love and peace.
