Our reflection passage for today is a bit challenging. It is more difficult for us to commit to a lifestyle of Recovery than it is for people to support our healing. We are asked to give up much to follow the Recovery steps. No one gives up shame, guilt, addiction, or pain for the sake of healing without embracing Recovery.
Some of us have focused on the needs and wants of other people at the cost of neglecting ourselves. When I was a child I took care of my parent’s emotional needs. Due in part to my mother’s bipolar disorder, she had little capacity to help build my inner resiliency. My father was busy making a living to pay our expenses and taking care of Mom. My validation came through achievement in sports, academics, and pleasing others.
I am learning true compassion, kindness, and love through Recovery for my internal growth, allowing me to offer these virtues to people. Recovery teaches me how to love my wife, children, family, friends, and other people in my life. I can love those in my life so much better by loving Recovery first.
We can reach incredible rewards of love. Learning to love Recovery, we begin to feel this incredible love for healing. Our hearts open and the love comes out. The brightness of the day is right in front of us. I am hugging you because I am loving myself and those you love.
