September 26, 2024 The Gift Of A Candy Bar!

Who is the richest person I ever met? The answer is my late grandfather. He owned a supper club and shoe repair shop in our town of 900 people. When I was a boy I enjoyed walking three blocks from my home to his place of business. Behind the bar was a basket of candy bars. I could have anyone I wanted. I used to be mesmerized by customers giving Grandpa money for a carry-out chicken dinner or to pick up a pair of shoes he repaired.

Later he retired from his businesses, as a school board member, and a Fire Chief of the village where we lived. In June each year, there was a fireman’s picnic. Grandpa would give us grandchildren money to enjoy the food and the rides. Not much money was spent on food but a substantial amount was put toward going on rides. When he attended events in the community people often came up to talk with him about current and past events. I realized how much respect people had for him. I do not know for sure but I suspect he gave meals away to those in need and discounts on shoes being repaired when someone was experiencing financial hardship. I saw him as wealthy but in reality, he was poor like some of those living in the village.

Recovery tells us there is a better way. We are given an outline of how that road needs to go. There are three components. First, let’s be excited about Recovery. We ask ourselves when was the last time we were fired up about our Recovery? Second, has Recovery become a kind of club we belong to? Sometimes we are statues quo and don’t want to upset the apple cart. When was the last time we were fired up about our Recovery? Third, how do we look at people who have harmed us? We look at a person not in a condemning way but loving way. When was the last time we were fired up about our Recovery?

Submitting to Recovery means letting go of external circumstances such as power, material goods, and an addiction to recognition. Recovery teaches us there is much we can give to ourselves and others such as compassion, kindness, care, love, and a host of others in our hearts and souls.

In giving up we receive and living the invitation of Recovery, and we grow to be the best version of ourselves.
