Fran and Ed loved their son Luke (Age 12) and were devoted parents. Fran and Ed were both in Recovery from a mental health condition and addiction. Luke and several of his friends were enrolled in a basketball tournament. His parents chaperoned and drove the boys to a town 50 miles away from their home.
They were driving back from the tournament, about 40 miles from home, when Fran looked up and noticed Luke was not in the vehicle. She let Ed know their son was missing. He said, “Hold on as I turn around and return to the tournament location”.
Upon arriving back at the site Fran walked quickly toward the gym. As she was approaching the gym she heard a ball bouncing. She opened the doors, their son was at the far end of the floor. She approached him and said, “We have been looking for you”.
All of us may relate to the worries and anxiety a situation such as this produces. Worries and anxieties happen in my life. These feelings are part of the human condition. Due to my mental health condition worries and anxieties are twice the intensity of a person without a mental health condition, addiction, or trauma.
When worry and anxiety grab hold of me I become distant from Recovery wandering around hopeless in my daily circumstances. In the story, Fran kept her mental health condition in her heart. Her heart holds various human emotions; joy, pain, clarity, confusion, trust, and devotion to Recovery. This gave her the ability to cope with a highly charged situation.
We Recover (12 steps) throughout our lives. Recovery will lead us to a heart-to-heart connection. My heart lives this out for others in similar circumstances and strives to be faithful to the 12 steps. When we are an active participant in our Recovery we will find it carries our anxiety, depression, hopelessness, joy, confusion, and prosperity. We put our trust in the 12 steps and their will for our lives and help us bring others to the beauty of Recovery.
