July 12, 2024 The Heart Is “A” Beaten!

Imagine a document with the 12 steps of Recovery listed. Within the steps, is a shadow of a heart touching each statement. When we enter Recovery our hearts are pierced due to mental health conditions, addiction, trauma, or situational circumstances (loss of a loved one, divorce, car accident, and others).

Two things happen when we decide to Recover. First, we become a believer that we can experience healing. Second, is the birth of our commitment to the 12 steps or another Recovery program. What does it mean after so many years to have hope and peace? The heart is returned to wholeness.

We are part of a mystical community (a person who claims to attain or believes in the possibility of attaining, insight into beliefs transcending ordinary human knowledge, as by direct communication with the divine or one’s intuition). How do we actively engage in a program? Primarily we open our hearts to the acuteness of our pain. To stabilize our mental and behavioral challenges use the skills we are taught to free ourselves from a broken heart (skills can be attained by attending a support group, peers in Recovery, mindfulness, and other options based on our unique needs).

Repairing a heart is to offer up our challenges to someone greater than ourselves or a group. We may need to cycle through Recovery several times to cement our beliefs about ourselves (Stages of the cycle; escalation, acute, stabilization, and stable).

An amazing occurrence happens when our broken hearts are mended. We experience love and mercy for ourselves and other people.
