May 27, 2024 My Support Group Experience

If we belong to a support group or another community how accepting are we of new members? Do we model Recovery behavior in the communities we participate in? Do we remember what it was like when we joined a support group?

When I began attending support groups I was anxious and extremely uncomfortable. I realized I was going outside of my comfort zone by leaving the security of only participating in individual therapy and working to find the effective cocktail of medication with my psychiatrist.

Initially, I struggled with boundaries. How much do I disclose about myself? The support group I joined told me what is said in group stays in group. I thought to myself, “Does it really?” Over time I learned to trust the members of the group. Once I was secure with those in the support group words I spoke moved to action and I found new healing places within my heart and soul.

To be in Recovery is to realize that change is possible. We change language from the third person to the first person. We enter into our story and heal. The story is ours and by owning it we cross into discomfort. May the force be with us on this spiritual journey.

To commemorate Memorial Day let’s take a moment to thank those in the military for our freedom. We also want to remember all the families and friends who have lost a soldier during the line of duty. God bless them and God Bless America!!

Peace

Larry
