November 7, 2023 Humility

Recovery is a lifelong process requiring support and our ability to learn humility. What does it mean to be humble? It is an opportunity for us to admit the impact a mental health condition, addiction, and trauma is having on us. Using recovery as our framework is where our growth lies.

Once there was a three-year-old boy who was excited because his family was going to the beach. The boy was not skilled enough to swim on his own. His dad had access to old inner tubes that could be used to float. He brought several different sizes to fit each of his children.

The boy received a small inner tube that fits him perfectly. He and his dad set to float on the lake together. What bothered him was his father was hanging onto his tub in the event he would tip over into the water. The depth was just above the boy’s height and there were light waves that could become an additional obstacle.

The boy wanted to go it alone, so he waited for his dad to loosen his grip just a little bit. Finally, the time came and the boy used his legs and arms to jolt free from his dad’s grip. Suddenly a brisk wind whipped through the lake creating waves and he flipped over in his inner tube. His feet were visible in the air and his head was submerged in the water. He realized he could not save himself alone and needed his dad to save him.

Reflection:

“Learn our limitations, pride, and ego are part of the human condition. We are not the higher power in our lives. Recognizing the need for humility is a gift.”
