October 6, 2023 Daily Routine

While going through outpatient treatment for my mental health condition I learned the importance of having a daily routine to help manage my feelings and urges. I recall incorporating a routine into my life when I was an adolescent.

I attended a four-year boarding school called St. Lawrence Seminary. Each morning I was shaken out of a deep sleep by a school bell. I knew I had 30 minutes to shower, get dressed, and make my bed. A bell rang again signaling I had five minutes to get to the cafeteria for breakfast. Next, the bell rang indicating it was time for morning prayers in the chapel. From this point forward a bell rang each time a class began and ended. I played sports after school and there was a bell for the beginning and end of practice. There were bells letting me know supper was ready, when it was time for night prayers and study hall.

I was suffering from depression and anxiety as an adolescent. Looking back it was helpful for me to rely on a routine to manage my behavior and emotions. With that said, today I strive each day to have a balanced lifestyle. I incorporate activities into my daily routine such as; religious/spiritual, physical, financial, intellectual, emotional, mental, and social.

A regular routine for me includes 8-10 hours of sleep each night (Including weekends and holidays). If you want to determine your sleep cycle go to bed at a certain time, don’t set an alarm, and wake up to see how many hours you slept. Do this for a week to determine your optimum sleep cycle.

A routine that works for one person may not work for another person. Your work or school schedule, family responsibilities, and other commitments determine how you want to establish a daily routine.

What does your daily routine look like?

What adjustments may be necessary to improve your mental, emotional, and physical health?

Write me and let me know about your routine and the benefits you notice on your mental health condition and addiction.

Peace

Larry
