October 2, 2023 NAMI Booth

On Saturday I had the privilege of having a booth at the National Alliance on Mental Illness Walk (NAMI). Several people approached my booth to purchase a book, discuss my work, or share their stories of Recovery with me.

One person shared the mental health condition of a twin brother. He is suffering from schizophrenia and extreme paranoia. It is especially hard for the family to know the best actions to take in order to support him. This person said to me, “It has been tough on Mom”. The person impressed me with their kindness, love, and care for their brother. I was grateful the person bought a copy of my book and intended to give it to his mother.

Next, a young person approached my booth. This person was interested in my story and listened intensely. Once I completed my little elevator speech the young person opened up to me, “Two years ago I was diagnosed with bolar disorder. Prior to the diagnosis my behavior was (weird)”. This person explained moments when they did not sleep for three days. This person still has episodes, but with the blessing of treatment, life is more manageable now.

Having a booth and seeing the number of participants walking brought joy to my heart. People really care about mental health conditions and addiction. My wife and daughter were with me. It made me feel supported and loved that they participated in the day with me. I have written on several occasions how important support from family helps me with my Recovery.

Finally, I mentioned two people who shared their circumstances with me, there were others who shared their stories with me. Thank you for opening up your heart to me.

Peace

Larry
