Last evening I met with a book club that selected my book, “SuperHuman Being” to read. This was the first time I did this since my book was published in April. I was anxious since I did not know how it would go. The format allowed each person to go around the circle to share their perspective. Next, I gave some background on the book. One person wanted to know why I chose the color green. My response was, “Like the color pink for breast cancer awareness green signifies mental health awareness.
My objective for the book is twofold. First, those who suffer from a mental health condition and addiction can use the book as a companion to help support their Recovery. Second, those who support people with these conditions can gain a better understanding of what it is like for a person to manage their daily lives and increase their own empathy for a loved one or friend.
I was asked the question what are the major things in my life that have helped my Recovery? Having an emotional connection with another person was vital. In my case, this person is my wife. I can share my feelings and thoughts with her knowing she will not shame, judge, or attempt to solve all of my problems. The other thing that helps me is allowing God into my heart and relying on his strength during some of the darkest moments in my life.
I felt so blessed to have the opportunity to meet with people who read my book. I am more blessed to know that they can take some of the points they learned from my book and implement some of the suggestions.
When I finished the session last evening my heart was filled with joy because of their feedback. They have some new tools to help support those with a mental health conditions and addiction. I am open to doing this with other book clubs or groups, email me to arrange a day and time.
