July 7, 2026 “Every Brick Matters!”

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

In 1163, a man was walking along the River Seine in Paris when he came upon a huge construction site. Curious, he walked over and saw workers laying bricks.

He asked one worker, “What are you building here?”

The worker replied, “I’m just laying bricks.”

The man walked a little farther and asked another worker the same question.

“What are you building here?”

The worker scoffed and said, “Are you blind? I’m building a wall.”

Feeling discouraged, the man turned to leave. But before he walked away, he noticed another worker laying bricks. Once again, he asked, “What are you building here?”

The worker stepped back, looked toward the sky, and smiled.

“We are building a cathedral,” he said. “Cathedrals are beautiful. You have never seen one as beautiful as this.”

That story invites an important question. Why? Why would people spend so much time, energy, and money to build such a place? What inspired them to keep going year after year? And what does this have to do with Recovery?

There are many reasons people build a cathedral or commit themselves to Recovery. We may want to look better on the outside. We may hope to leave a legacy. Pride, ego, or the desire for recognition can also play a part. And, of course, we long to heal.

But all of these reasons are small compared to the greatest reason of all.

That reason is faith.

Faith is the quiet confidence that healing is possible. It is the steady belief that Recovery can take root in our hearts, renew our minds, and shape our lives for as long as we live.

What do beautiful cathedrals really tell us?

They remind us that there is something greater than stone, art, or architecture. They point us toward hope. They remind us that God is present and that He is always at work, even when we cannot yet see the finished masterpiece.

Recovery makes the same promise. It walks with us through every season of life. It is present in the grandest cathedrals of the richest cities and in the humblest places of the poorest neighborhoods.

Today, be mindful of Recovery’s presence. With every faithful step, you are not just laying another brick. You are building a beautiful cathedral within your own heart.

Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
