I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.
In opera, a leitmotif is a small piece of music that helps us recognize a character. When we listen closely, we begin to notice these sounds. The flute may represent the bird. The drums may signal the hunters. The oboe might be the duck. And the melody on the violin often belongs to the lead actor.
Movies use leitmotifs too. For example, when the kettledrums boom in a strong military rhythm, we sense that the villain is near.
Recovery also has a leitmotif—a gentle melody that helps us recognize it.
From the moment Recovery steps onto the stage of our lives, its purpose is clear. Recovery works to ease sadness, anxiety, trauma, and depression. And its leitmotif is light.
“Light!” is the first word spoken by Recovery. Light shines whenever we take action and practice the Twelve Steps. Light appears when we walk in nature, read spiritual books, pray, or speak with friends in Recovery. In these moments, we begin to feel peace growing within us.
Recovery is light.
Even in our hardest seasons, when life feels dark, the light of Recovery still shines. Sometimes the light may seem small, but it is always there, guiding us forward. In Recovery, there is always hope.
That is good news.
So let us create our own leitmotif. Listen to uplifting music. Let its melody reach your mind, your heart, and your soul. Let it remind you that the light of Recovery is always playing within your life.
