January 21, 2026 “Building on Solid Ground!”

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

Catherine DiNuzzo is a Catholic Licensed Professional Counselor. She runs Sacred Heart Mental Wellness, where she helps people move from anxiety to peace.

I recently watched a video she shared about healing from anxiety. She said, “Having holes inside us is part of being human, but they do not define us. What do we use to fill that hole?” The answer is different for each person. Some try to fill it with perfection, alcohol, drugs, food, achievement, or other unhealthy habits.

She then asked, “What if we build our house on sand?” We know it will eventually fall. The sand represents anxiety. Anxiety tells us we are not enough. Our unhealthy habits are often our way of trying to fill what feels empty inside.

When we begin to build a basement, we are trying to climb out of the hole. At this stage, we become aware of the emptiness within us. A strong foundation is needed to support healthy choices.

As we build our house, we learn to accept God’s will for our lives. If someone has harmed us, we choose to forgive them. This does not mean their actions were okay, but forgiveness helps us move forward. It emotionally grounds us so we no longer need unhealthy habits to soothe ourselves.

We can also set boundaries to protect ourselves when needed. During a deep time of anxiety in my life, I realized I needed distance from my parents to heal. We had no contact for ten years. When we reunited, I was able to forgive them for the abuse I experienced in childhood.

Today, I continue to fill my hole by accepting my imperfections, not using food to comfort my emotions, and living a balanced life. Jesus has taught me mercy and forgiveness. Now, instead of my ego trying to fill the emptiness, I trust in God’s will for my life.

How do you fill your hole? Spend some quiet time in reflection on this question.

Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
