I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.
I am having a rather unusual day. I drove to Costco to pick up a few things we needed. On my way home, an engine light came on. Since I am not very mechanical, I pulled the car manual from the glove box and got out of the car to read it.
I learned that the light was about the stop-and-start system. The manual said I should contact the dealer because service might be needed.
After that, I needed to scan and send my doctor’s orders for blood work. What should have taken five minutes took over forty-five minutes because of a paper jam.
I felt frustration and irritation rising fast. I also felt a bit of shame that came from my past, not from what was really happening in the moment. I decided to take our dog for a walk. That simple walk helped calm me and change how I saw the chaos of my morning.
I realized I needed to be compassionate, loving, and kind to myself. When I did that, I was able to settle back into a steady and peaceful state of mind.
This is an example of how I use the Twelve Steps to support my Recovery. In Step Twelve, we experience a spiritual awakening as a result of the steps. We learn to love ourselves and practice these principles in all parts of our lives.
Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
I offer the following:
Prayer/Devotional/Reflection by Bruce Downes
God of strength and God of stillness,
Today I stand in Your promise.
I choose not to defend myself, not to strive for control,
not to live anxiously about the future.
You are my shield. My help comes from You.
Teach me to trust Your timing and rest in Your defence.
When I am tempted to panic, let me hear again the words You
spoke through Moses:
“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still.”
I release every battle into Your hands.
I release every wound, every fear, and every need for approval.
Let me walk in courage, not because I am strong, but because
You are near.
You are the lifter of my head.
You are the One who will bring justice, establish truth, and lead
me forward.
Let this year be marked not by my striving, but by Your
sufficiency.
Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
