October 28, 2025 “Saying Yes to Recovery!”

During reflection this morning, the word obedience came to my heart. I also heard this same message at a retreat with my wife this past weekend. When I receive a spiritual message from two or three different places in a short time, I know it’s God’s way of tapping my shoulder to get my attention.

What does obedience mean in Recovery? Recovery calls us to a humble, loving obedience that grows from a desire for a relationship—not just rules or rituals. It invites us to live out the virtues of the Twelve Steps with love and trust, aligning our hearts, thoughts, and actions with faith. This obedience flows naturally from love and leads to spiritual growth.

Sometimes, we get stuck in places we aren’t meant to stay. When that happens, Recovery is gently showing us it’s time to move. But for many of us, the word obedience can stir old pain. For me, it once meant submitting to my father’s anger.

Now, through Recovery, I’m learning a new kind of obedience—one that heals. It’s about saying yes to love, to growth, and to the quiet voice in our hearts calling us forward. When we say yes, we open the door to healing and let Recovery guide us. When we stay silent, we remain stuck.

Our yes allows Recovery—or God, for those who believe—to lead us toward peace. Recovery and God are never far from us. When we surrender to the Twelve Steps, or to our faith, we unlock the gifts of love, hope, and charity.

Where in our lives can we let go and say yes—even when everything inside us wants to resist the healing power of Recovery?
