October 2, 2025 “Messengers of Recovery!”

Do we believe in guardian angels? Merriam-Webster defines a guardian as someone who has the care of another person or their property. A guardian can protect, defend, and guide. In Recovery, this image of guardianship beautifully reflects the role of guardian angels.

The 12-steps are like messengers—guides placed in our lives to protect us and show us a better way. This path has been with us since the 1930s, and it continues to bring healing. Believing in angels takes faith. We may not see them face-to-face, but we often hear their voices in unexpected ways: in a support group, during therapy, through a book, or in moments of prayer.

Recovery reminds us that God, or a higher power places messengers in our lives to bring encouragement and sometimes warnings. From the earliest days of faith—first in Judaism and later in Christianity—angels have been seen as bearers of God’s love and truth. When we turn our lives over to God, or a higher power, these messengers continue to walk with us, strengthening our Recovery.

The 12-steps serve as a kind of caregiver for our souls. They guide us toward healthier, more peaceful paths. Walking this way requires humility, but humility does not mean thinking of ourselves as worthless. Instead, it means recognizing the deep worth God or a higher power has already placed within us. It means remembering that every life—including ours—is precious.

Let us take time to pray or meditate in gratitude for the messengers God, or a higher power, has placed along our path. May we ask for their guidance and strength as we continue to practice the 12-steps, one day at a time.
