August 20, 2025 “The Trademark of Recovery!”

Recovery reminds us of something profoundly simple yet deeply challenging: love. Love for ourselves, and love for one another. To love ourselves is to accept that we are worthy, to be gentle with our mistakes, and to honor the courage it takes to keep showing up. In loving ourselves, we learn compassion, vulnerability, and gratitude for the unique life we’ve been given.

To love others is to put their well-being at heart’s center—to listen, to show kindness, to extend empathy, and to walk alongside them without judgment. Recovery does not use these words lightly. Love is not a distant ideal but a living practice, a daily invitation.

If we took a poll and asked, What is the true trademark of Recovery?—the answers might vary. Some would point to freedom from substances, some to resilience, some to healing. Yet at the deepest level, Recovery has always had one defining mark: the way we love ourselves and one another.

This love is not abstract. It is expressed in forgiveness when we stumble, generosity when others are in need, and gentleness when our minds and bodies feel unsettled. It is a patient love, one that holds hope even in seasons of darkness.

And there will come a time on this journey when we are asked to name the most outstanding feature of Recovery. Without hesitation, our answer will be clear: We love ourselves. And we love one another.
