June 25, 2025 Quenching Our Thirst!

There is no room for us to boast about our efforts in Recovery. We lift our eyes to God (our higher power) and recognize with gratitude the divine grace and power at work in our lives. The 12th step says, “We gain self-awareness and insight
into our Recovery as a result of listening to the will of God. We model the steps, making them real in our lives, and support the growth of our brothers and sisters in Recovery.” We are salt and light to others in self-giving love.

Prayer and reflection are silent movements of our hearts. Do we recall a time in life when we were thirsty? Our throat is dry, our tongue clings to the roof of our mouth, and we are unable to produce any saliva. A tall glass of water or Gatorade extinguishes our thirst. This is similar to our spiritual life. When we experience a spiritual desert in our lives, God wants us to turn to prayer and reflection. He desires our friendship.

Whether we realize it or not, prayer and reflection are the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. Prayer and reflection are the internal work of the Holy Spirit that lifts us beyond ourselves in confident trust in God, our Creator. God has given us the 12 steps, Recovery, and healing as a humble response to his relentless invitation and divine friendship.
