June 16, 2025 Ethically Speaking & Fathers Day

The week away was full of activities. Monday, June 9, 2025 I attended the “National Rural Institute on Alcohol, Drugs, and Addictions Conference” at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin. I participated in a day-long lesson on “Professional Development of Ethical Competency” by Jeffrey A Ahonen. As a Certified Peer Specialist and Certified Advanced Social Worker in Wisconsin, I am guided by a set of values, principles, and practices that inform my attitudes and behaviors in the best interest of the people I serve.

This applies to us in Recovery. We adhere to principles, values, and practices that guide our healing. The twelve steps inform our attitudes and behaviors in the best interest of our Recovery. Let’s say we have a difficult decision to make. Our financial resources are limited. We need to decide whether we want to eat or purchase our mental health medication. How will we decide what to do? What will we do? How will we judge what to do?

Neither choice is right nor wrong. Either choice brings adverse consequences. Jeffrey A Ahonen says, “Doing the best possible thing under the circumstances.”

When our Recovery is aligned with what is good and right, and leads us to do the best possible implementation of the steps, we are doing Recovery in the very best and most realistic way.

I had a wonderful Father’s Day celebration with my three beautiful daughters. Our oldest daughter, who lives in the state of Arkansas, was home for the entire week. My in-laws have a cabin about one hour from our home. On Wednesday, we spent the day with each other, relaxed, and cherished each other’s company. Two of my daughters gifted me a paper shredder, which I need because the old one wore out. My oldest daughter made me business cards and bookmarks (see picture below). I am cherishing each gift equally. https://superhumanbeing.net/

I hope this finds all of you doing well. If there are any topics you would like me to focus on during the upcoming weeks, email me at ljw@superhumanbeing.net with your suggestions.
