May 15, 2025 “Honesty!”

Several years ago, a friend told me, “It is not about being honest with people, it is about being honest with yourself.” This little nugget of advice remains as important in my life today as it was when I heard it decades ago. Every Thursday, I connect with a group of authors for support, advice, and to improve my writing skills.

During today’s call, an author said, “It is better to be honest than good.” I have written over 450 blogs. Reflecting on some of them, I notice the tendency to make them good rather than honest (I am not being dishonest, just holding back). For example, I am apprehensive writing about spirituality and religion. I fear people will want to stop subscribing to my blog.

Spirituality and religion are cornerstones of my Recovery. I have increased God (higher power) in my writings over the last six months. Growing closer to God allows me to be honest with myself. God does not abandon me, he tells me he made me good, he wants me to be authentic, he accepts my imperfections, and loves me no matter what.

There is no other being on this planet that gives us those gifts. Ironically, when I attend support groups, see my therapist, and share with my wife, these are characteristics that fuel our relationships.

I intend to highlight, ever so often the role of God (higher power) in my Recovery. We have a sentence we open each support group with, “Take what you want from the group and leave the rest.” For me to remain on the road to Recovery, my writing and presentations must be honest. I hope my thoughts continue to serve you well.

The most important message came from a dear friend long ago, “It is not about being honest with people, it is about being honest with yourself.”
