May 13, 2025 Self Care & Recovery!

Earlier today, I attended a book signing event at Whirlybird Coffee Co. in Chippewa Falls, WI. They are holding events this week to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month. Liz Wallerius and Loralie, her mother, own and operate this peaceful paradise. https://www.whirlybirdcoffee.com/

They are hosts at heart. According to their website, “The cafe was born out of a desire to be a place of rest and refreshment for our community. Our dream was to open a coffee shop, but our passion is serving people.”

We reference self-care as an important ingredient in Recovery. Whirlybird and coffee houses are treasures on our road to healing. We can meet a friend, grab a cup of coffee, get a yummy treat, and find a table to lounge at. Coffee houses offer a semi-confidential atmosphere to discuss our mental health or other conversational topics.

Dark moments in my Recovery were spent meeting people at coffee houses. I shared my soul with those in support of my effort to heal. Talking helped me relieve the intensity of suffering. I no longer talk with people solely about mental health. At the beginning of Recovery, this is normal. I credit the healing work I have done for the decreased need to focus on mental health and share other areas of my life. I confidently say, “Recovery Works.”

Do me a favor, May is Mental Health Awareness month. Do one activity to support mental health. Invite a friend out for a cup of coffee, call someone in need of emotional support, sign up to receive my daily blog, attend a support group, read a book on mental health, or make a donation to a Mental Health Organization.
