Have we considered the role of security in our Recovery? Security is freedom from danger or threat, including freedom from fear, anxiety, and doubt.
Mom’s emotional instability (Bipolar) and Dad’s abuse toward me left little room to experience feelings of security. My insecurities led to overachieving, excessively pleasing others, an eating disorder, drinking too much, post-traumatic stress, difficulties with feelings, and an inability to emotionally connect to people.
What did I do to Recover my security? First, I found a therapist skilled in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). https://www.emdr.com/what-is-emdr/ Second, I married my wife 10 years ago. She let me know I was created good. She listened to my story without judgment. She held me when I was suffering. She made me feel safe. She helped me build a secure attachment to her and myself.
Security is not without danger, threat, fear, anxiety, and doubt. When we feel secure in our own skin, we are free to experience our feelings as part of the human condition rather than feeding our insecurities or suffering emotional anguish. Let’s take time to meditate on this.
