A wise person once told me, “We teach what we want to learn.” Hope has been elusive and abstract for me. Pam Sininck is helping me understand hope in a series of talks at our parish. I want to write about hope through the mind of our Recovery.
How is hope significant to our lives? If hope is not impacting our lives, it is Blah, Blah, Blah! We need to reflect hope and reflect the knowledge of Recovery’s healing and love. So how do we reflect lives that Recovery is with us? Pam says, “To fully live a life in hope, I believe we need to profess hope, we need to seek out hope, and we need to nourish hope to keep it alive in our lives, then we need to share it and bring it out into the world.”
Let’s start with the first reflection to fully live a life of hope. Pam says, “We need to profess hope.” How do we profess our hope in Recovery? We do this by integrating the 12 steps of Recovery into our lives. Specifically, we say, ” We believe Recovery is possible, and we commit to overcoming the internal and external challenges, barriers, and obstacles confronting us.” The more we profess hope using the 12 steps, the more it becomes part of our lives. Other proven concepts can be substituted for the 12 steps.
Can we think of a time in other areas of our lives that the more we say something it becomes true? For instance, when I purchased a new vehicle, I suddenly noticed others driving the same make and model. The more we talk about hope, the more it becomes the forefront in our lives. Pam says, “Now I prepared for the mission I see hope everywhere. It is amazing what makes me think of hope.”
Hope is not a feeling. Hope appears in several different ways in our lives, such as meal time discussions, reflections, prayers, seeking forgiveness, attend a support group, go to therapy, and many other happenings in our lives.
This is a sample of professing hope in our lives of Recovery. Tomorrow, I will share Pam’s reflection on “Seeking Hope.”
