March 20, 2025 “Knock Three Times”!

Some of us believe, “Ask and we shall receive.” Let me be clear: When we ask for something from our spouse, friend, or another person it does not mean they will magically give us what we ask for. Recovery can help us know the deepest desires and longings of our hearts. This means we may not always get what we want but Recovery will give us what we need when we need it.

Recovery shows us when we practice the 12 steps in complete trust we will be granted an opportunity to heal our hearts. Recovery teaches us, “Seek and we will find, knock and healing will be open to us”.

Persistence in prayer, reflection, meditation, or mindfulness is critical because Recovery is not a fast food service. Persistence in asking, seeking, and knocking at the door is necessary if healing is to open up for us. I have been learning, working, and taking action on the 12 steps for several years. I remember five years ago how I interpreted their meaning. I read the steps today and I realize they have a deeper tug at my heart. Does this ever happen to you? You read a book and then two years later you read it again only to find a deeper understanding of what the author is writing about.

Recovery offers a love that can be received by those of us who genuinely hunger for it. As long as our prayer, reflection, meditation, and mindfulness focus on having things like money and popularity, Recovery cannot give us healing because our hearts are not ready to receive it.

Yet take confidence and comfort in the fact Recovery in its own time and own way will grant us healing even though we do not see or understand how our hearts are moving in our lives. All we can do is entrust our lives to Recovery’s will and merciful love.

Brothers and sisters, Recovery gives us the key to unlocking the power of healing. We are asked to trust in it even when we are depressed, anxious, scared, and experiencing other challenging feelings. We can appreciate the power of taking action steps when we give ourselves totally to Recovery, find hope, remain firm, and take heart by trusting, “The Way”.
