February 26, 2025 Heal Gut , Save Brain

I am reading a book I picked up by Mayo Clinic Press titled, “Heal Your Gut, Save Your Brain written by Partha Nandi, M.D.. He is a gastroenterologist (GI), and clinical associate professor of medicine at Michigan State University. He utilizes a no-nonsense approach to health and wellness combining Eastern and Western techniques and philosophies.

I struggle with constipation, bloating, gas, fatigue, and skin issues. Recently I connected with a GI doctor to get a second opinion on my gut health. I met with her today and she said, “I have not come across a person with the type of condition you have”. I find this extremely frustrating despite the doctor’s honesty and sincerity about my condition. She will be making a referral to GI at Mayo in Rochester Minnesota.

Research is showing the connection between mental health and substance misuse conditions and our guts. During the next few blogs, I will share with you what I am learning about this connection.

Dr. Nandi says, “Most gut health books offer one solution: nutrition. Some add meditation or exercise to the mix as a way to reduce stress.” He goes on to say, “…because every aspect of how we live our lives plays an immense role in how well or poorly our gut functions. The medicines and surgical techniques of Western medicine are critical to adequately addressing gut health, but science supports the idea that we need to look at additional factors: nutrition, movement, purpose, community, spirituality .” He calls these factors the Five Pillars

Before I go deeply into the factors it is important to share what researchers are learning about the gut microbiome – “the bacteria and other microorganisms that naturally reside within the intestines and help us digest our food – can influence certain physiological processes in the brain. Our microbiome can impact how we think and function – cognition, memory, motor control – for better or worse.”

The takeaway from this article is for us to recognize gut and brain health are interrelated. If you suffer from mental health or substance misuse conditions do you also have physical health issues? I would like to learn what type of physical challenges you are experiencing. Could you please send me a brief email of the type of conditions you have and for how long? I will keep your specific condition confidential. I will use your information to communicate generally such as, “5 individuals have gut issues.”
