February 10, 2025 The Links and Feelings!

Recovery brings to the surface feelings that are confusing because they are buried inside our bodies. We tend to operate in the world primarily from our necks up. When we open up to our feelings, we may act out to cope with their intensity or deny having any feelings. A skill we may find helpful is Chain Analysis. Imagine links interconnected in a chain. When locked together, the links provide a sense of safety and security.

The first link becomes vulnerable unless the last link is attached to the first link. The first link represents our ability to allow emotions to surface, prompting us to dissect why we feel the way we do.

The prompting event is the second link, which connects with three more links. This allows time for us to analyze and discover our feelings. Feelings will surface, making us vulnerable to freezing, running, fleeing, substance misuse, and other unhealthy conditions.

The final links are the consequences of our actions. When we become vulnerable, causing confusion or overwhelming feelings, we should use S.T.O.P.. Immediately Stop, Take a Step Back, Observe what is happening within our body and environment, and Proceed mindfully. S.T.O.P. allows time to get in touch with our body without acting impulsively.

The final link is the impact of our decision on other people which connects to our first link allowing us to assess how well we proceeded mindfully toward emotional peace.

Reflection:

“Give sorrow words, the grief that does not speak knits up the over wrought heart, and bids it break,”.-William Shakespeare wrote in his play Macbeth
