Many of us require medication to help manage our mental health and substance misuse conditions. During my lifetime, medication has been part of my treatment plan. Yesterday, I had an appointment with two psychiatrists as part of my three-month routine.
We discussed my health. I mentioned that I experience drowsiness in the morning, which impacts my stamina for the rest of the day. I continue to be constipated, which may be a side effect of one medication. However, my constipation started before I took the medication.
My psychiatrist said, “As we age, our hormonal levels change, which impacts how the body metabolizes medication”.
He advised me to decrease one of the medications by 25 milligrams to see if it would impact my physical symptoms. I am averse to reducing medication since in the past it has increased my sadness, anxiety, and negative thinking. During the weeks ahead I will update you on my progress.
I am fearful about doing this and on the other hand, I do not want to take more medication than necessary. I will work closely with my psychiatrists to ensure a smooth transition. Medication is not an exact science but an art form dependent on our hormones, the health of our gut, and the chemicals that feed our brains.
Please keep me in your prayers as I go through this, and as always, you are in my prayers.
