A therapist worked with several people. Before the end of each session, the therapist asked them to write down their recovery goals and share them with the therapist. The therapist didn’t say, “I am going to prepare a list of goals for you.”
The Recoverees do what they are supposed to do. They don’t ask the therapist to write their goals. Following the 12 steps teaches us mercy, generosity, and forgiveness, as well as to be loving toward people and to act like the Higher Power (God) has called us to act.
We don’t boast about our efforts. We are supposed to do what we are supposed to do as a matter of who we are, lovers of someone greater than ourselves. We don’t set goals because we want to look good on the outside. We are not to raise ourselves up because of the work we do. Our beliefs and faith cause us to act in ways that help others do what they are supposed to do.
When I was a kid the basketball team I was on practiced most Wednesday evenings. I did not receive any kind of lifting up for attending practice, it was what I was supposed to do. There are activities we are called to do. We are talking about what we are supposed to do as lovers of one another, Higher Power, lovers of peer support community, and lovers of one another.
When we act like this the very action causes us to do what is good. We need to be mindful of each moment in our lives to capture the vision we are supposed to act on.
