A person was an employee at a local restaurant she came up to a pastor while he was having a quiet dinner alone. With tears in his eyes, the waiter said, “My son died at age 15 which was 3 years ago and I keep praying he will appear to me giving a sign he is ok. But he never comes, why won’t he come”?
The pastor told him, “Maybe you are praying for the wrong sign. God’s signs are very different. Maybe we should say a prayer together”. So the pastor took his hand and he was trembling. They prayed by asking Mary to touch this man’s broken heart. Mary knew what it was like to lose a son tragically without a goodbye.
When the pastor finished he blessed the man right there in the restaurant. As the pastor was walking away the man called out to the pastor, “I got my sign my son is ok”.
Every one of us is looking for signs to confirm we are going in the right direction. While healing from a mental health condition and substance misuse we seek signs. Yet signs are there if we can seek them out and see them.
We connect to receive signs into ourselves and we become that sign to each other. Signs don’t end with ourselves but point to another reality, a bigger reality than ourselves. We are called to draw our attention to the 12-steps of Recovery and to point others to the steps. We are to be used as a sign of the truth of faith that we shine brightly in the world through our actions.
We got our signs when we were born. Yes, our loved ones are ok and yes we are ok. Be kind and compassionate with yourself today.
