October 3, 2024 “The Bigger Picture”!

Do we become wrapped up with the tiniest little things in our lives? My spouse did not clean up the kitchen after making their breakfast, my husband forgot to put the toilet lid down again, Sam neglected to clean his bedroom, or my co-worker did not fill the copy machine with paper. These little things are picked on instead of embracing the fullness of life and relationship with the 12 steps of Recovery.

One evening I was preparing for a support group meeting. I asked a participant where her friend was since she had not attended several meetings. The participant said, “She just didn’t want to go to where all the hypocrites are” (someone who says they have particular moral beliefs but behaves in a way that shows these are not sincere).

I responded, “We are all hypocrites (People who say they hate cars but always beg you for a ride) who come to these meetings not to be a hypocrite…trying to be our best and follow the 12 steps and heal our hypocrisy…so yes we are hypocrites” (People who tell you not to eat candy while they chomp away on licorice all day).

I went on to say, “So your friend is going to stay out of meetings with the hypocrites who are not trying to change”?

Because I am a hypocrite I turn to Recovery and say, “I need help to love myself and other people. I will do what I can to be patient, kind, and gentle always aware of the presence of my Recovery. I need the help of a supportive community to help me love Recovery. When I love my Recovery I can love everything else well.

Recovery opens our eyes and allows us to love with a patience we do not know. This does not mean we are always patient nor does it mean we are always kind as we need to be. We understand what we are asked to be in Recovery not just during our meetings or other activities we participate in that support our Recovery but all the time.

We live in a spiritual world, that provides us with graces and blessings. By loving our Recovery first, we can love with gentleness, kindness, and fullness. The most incredible thing is that it flows over to everything and everyone. I don’t have it down but I am working on it. I invite you to join me on this journey.
