September 18, 2024 What We Feed Grows!

There was a coach who recruited talented basketball players for his team. With so many outstanding players it wasn’t easy to find playing time for each. One night after a game two men who supported the team financially told a couple of the players they should be playing more. The players developed a dark attitude and worked to impact the talented players on the team.

The assistant coaches said, “Should we release the players causing problems”? The coach said, “No let’s wait until tournament time. Then we will separate the dark attitudes from the talented players by dismissing those from the team with a dark attitude.

So what does this mean for us today? The truth is we all have a little bit of a dark attitude in us. The world we live in is both full of talented people and those with a dark spirit. We look around in our employment, school, churches, and community to determine who the talented and dark people are. The coach did not want the team disturbed because he hoped the players would change.

What do we do when circumstances arise like in this story? How do we know we or someone is talented (kind) or brings darkness into our lives?

There is ancient story about good and evil that grow together in us and animals. What grows the best? What happens to allow people to flourish? What manifests and becomes the strongest? The answer, “The one we nourish and feed is the one that will grown”.

This is us, the good that is in us manifests patience, kindness, forgiveness, and joy. Are we nourishing this? Nourishing the facts, truth, honesty. Are we supportive of our brothers and sisters? Do we proclaim one day we love one another and live that proclamation the next day?

Our good is what we nourish and do to overcome the inner darkness. This darkness may include anger, jealousy, pride, power, bullying, revenge instead of forgiveness. Anger held close will blot out an opportunity to flourish. Desire to hurt by overpowering people for our own sake.

What are we nourishing? Do we surround ourselves with goodness and kindness?
