Ten years ago I suffered through a difficult depression, anxiety, and trauma. I met with the Deacon from my church. I expressed feeling numb, sad, and fearful. He listened attentively to me, without judgment, and full of compassion. As our time together was closing, he said, “Look at the cross with Jesus on it. Remember no one on this side of the earth will suffer more than he did”.
His words and example helped me get through a difficult period of my life. There were several moments when the suffering overwhelmed me I looked at the cross with Jesus on it and reminded myself of the words the Deacon shared with me. God wants to give us his heart and allow him to love us with all he has.
This is the day to celebrate the gift of who we are and God’s love for us. Not just when he comes down from the cross but every day of our lives. We remember the Deacon he is one who beheld the heart of Jesus. He knew his love and how that love changed others. The Deacon saw the cross and encountered Jesus.
This reminds us to see the hope surrounding us, the ones we love, and those who struggle with family, economy, and sickness. Deacon reminds us to love ourselves and others. The presence of God is all around us. Take this day to remember we are never alone in our suffering, sadness, fear, joy, and peace. Let the Deacon’s advice inspire us to open our hearts to healing and Recovery.
