July 9, 2024 Authentic Love!

In many approaches or organizations, there are core values each person follows to promote the common good of the group. For example, I just completed a Mental Health Crisis Training with eleven core values to consider and actively implement. The 12 steps of Recovery are a foundation for us.

The steps are rooted in two key elements for our Recovery, love of others and love for ourselves. When we become so focused on the details of our lives we need to step back. The central theme of all the steps is “Love”. Recovery says everything flows from our hearts to our interactions with other people.

Recovery wants us to look at our intentions and motivations because all the teachings and actions of the steps lead us toward love. The alternative to love may be bitterness, anger, pride, or harming people. We can enter into quiet reflection to face Recovery and draw us closer to a more perfect love.

There is a person in my life I find it difficult to love. They easily irritate me with their behavior because it impacts other people. The Higher Power (for me God) embedded in the steps reminds me to love this person fully and deeply. When I do this it melts away my anger, irritation, and bitterness.

May we always keep love at the center of our Recovery. Our faith and authentic love generate joy, peace, and compassion. If we do this we are not far from actively practicing love for people and ourselves.
