Early in Recovery, I was asked, “Who are you?”
My response, “I am a social worker, husband, enjoy athletics, and a son.” I wonder if my Higher Power (God for me) may have been frustrated with my answer.
My Higher Power is always nudging me to celebrate the truth about my identity. Today when I answer the question, “Who are you?”
I respond, “I am kind, caring, compassionate, imperfect, vulnerable, religious (spiritual), connected to family and friends.”
We are on a journey throughout our lifetime. We never walk by ourselves because our Higher Power speaks to us through other people such as a spouse, family members, friends, coaches, therapists, doctors, and others we are connected with. Even when we have desert moments we can walk in a straight line. The journey is inside our hearts, mind, and soul.
Prayer and meditation are important in my daily routine. God does not want me to be modest during conversations with him. He wants to hear my requests large and small. I once heard a person say, “God is a multi-tasker.”
A relationship with God gives me strength. I am far from perfect and I am not free of depression, sadness, anxiety, and trauma. When balanced in our Recovery program we can help others and ourselves. We can dispose of great joy in our homes, support groups, and Recovery centers rather than hopelessness and fear.
Our Higher Power can heal physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual matters. We need to ask him. Then we listen for the answer to the question, “Who are you?”
“What thoughts and feelings hook us?”
Remember to be kind to yourself, remember we’re human and imperfect. Let’s appreciate the experience of moving in a meaningful direction to become the best version of ourselves.
Peace
Larry
